Our Founder’s Story

Our Founder’s Story

C. Ramakrishnan (Founder)

CHERAK is shaped by the journey, values, and generational legacy of its founder, C. Ramakrishnan.

The roots of this journey trace back to Ramakrishnan’s grandfather, Arumuga Achari, who worked as an Art Director at AVM Studios during the early years of Indian cinema. His work demanded a deep understanding of form, proportion, detailing, and visual storytelling — a discipline where creativity was inseparable from execution. This early exposure established a strong respect for craftsmanship, structure, and purposeful design within the family.

That legacy continued through Ramakrishnan’s father, Chelliah Achari, a skilled craftsman deeply involved in woodworking and construction. From a young age, Ramakrishnan was immersed in this environment, watching his father create functional and beautiful work with wood. Daily exposure to construction sites, materials, tools, and traditional building methods sparked an early fascination with design, structure, and the built environment.

A defining turning point came during a critical phase in the family business, when Ramakrishnan stepped away from formal schooling to work alongside his father in construction. What began as a necessity became his strongest education. At a very early age, he developed a hands-on understanding of materials, colours, processes, labour, and workmanship — learning by doing, not by theory.

This foundation shaped a principle that continues to define CHERAK today:

Nothing is designed unless it can be built.

From Hands-On Learning to Enterprise

From Hands-On Learning to Enterprise

Working closely with his father gave Ramakrishnan a strong grounding not only in design and execution, but also in business realitieslabour management, cost control, timelines, and client expectations.

By 1996, at the age of 24, he founded Cherak Interiors, establishing a workshop equipped with machinery, transport, and skilled labour. His role was never limited to the office. He remained closely involved in:

  • Design decisions
  • Technical detailing
  • Quality control
  • Client coordination

This direct involvement helped him deeply understand both the capabilities and limitations of people and processes, allowing him to build systems that work in real-world conditions.

What We Stand For

At CHERAK, every project is guided by three core principles:

Clarity

We understand our clients’ needs, budgets, and goals from the start—ensuring clear communication and zero surprises.

Control

With in-house design and execution, we maintain strict control over quality, timelines, and costs throughout the project.

Commitment

Our responsibility extends beyond handover, with detailed documentation & post-occupancy support we stand by.

Our Process

A Structured Approach. Predictable Outcomes.

At CHERAK, we believe great interiors are the result of methodical planning, disciplined execution, and accountable delivery.
Our four-phase process is designed to eliminate uncertainty, protect design intent, and ensure every project is delivered exactly as promised.

Phase 1: Enquiry & Onboarding

Understanding Your Vision

Every project begins with a detailed conversation to understand your requirements, expectations, and feasibility.

What we do:

  • Initial enquiry handling via website, referrals, or direct contact
  • Discovery call or meeting to assess scope, budget, and timelines
  • Site survey, measurements, and documentation of existing conditions
  • Preparation of a detailed fee proposal and Letter of Agreement (LOA)
  • Project onboarding after formal approval and partial upfront payment

Outcome:
A clearly defined project brief with aligned expectations from day one.

Phase 2: Concept & Design Development

From Ideas to Execution-Ready Design

This phase transforms insights into tangible design solutions.

What we do:

  • Programming based on lifestyle and functional requirements
  • Concept development through mood boards and material palettes
  • Space planning, layouts, and zoning studies
  • 3D visualisations, elevations, and finish selections
  • Finalisation of Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment (FF&E)
  • Preparation of Good for Construction (GFC) drawings covering all technical details

Outcome:
Complete design clarity with no room for assumptions.

Phase 3: Execution & Implementation

Precision on Site

Once designs are approved, our focus shifts to disciplined execution.

What we do:

  • Contractor coordination and material procurement
  • Site preparation, protection, and marking
  • Civil works, services, and structural modifications
  • Electrical, plumbing, and technical installations
  • Carpentry, finishes, painting, and polishing
  • Continuous site supervision and quality checks

Outcome:
Design intent realised with strict quality and timeline control.

Phase 4: Styling, Handover & Aftercare

Delivering a Finished, Functional Space

The final phase ensures every detail is complete and documented.

What we do:

  • Deep cleaning and final styling
  • Joint walkthrough and punch-list (snag) resolution
  • Delivery of a comprehensive handover pack, including:
  • Maintenance guidelines
  • Warranty documents
  • Appliance manuals
  • As-built drawings
  • Formal project sign-off and final settlement
  • Post-occupancy evaluation after 3–6 months

Outcome:
A fully functional space, delivered with confidence and long-term support.

A Process Built for Peace of Mind

Whether it’s a private residence or a professional environment, our process is designed to make the journey smooth, transparent, and reliable.

With CHERAK, you don’t just get an interior — you get certainty.
